Dhaka District is a district located in central Bangladesh. It is a part of the Dhaka Division. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, rests on the eastern banks of the Buriganga River which flows from the Turag to the south of the district. Over half of the area of the district is dominated by the city, discounting its metropolis surplus.

Subdivisions

Dhaka district consists of several thanas (literally “police station”, referring to the district or precinct covered by a police station) under Dhaka municipal area as well as five (5) upazilas (“sub-district”). For administrative purposes, a thana and a upazila are essentially identical. The five upazilas in Dhaka district not part of the city are:

* Dhamrai Upazila
* Dohar Upazila
* Keraniganj Upazila
* Nawabganj Upazila
* Savar Upazila

Dhaka City has seven (7) principal thanas and fourteen (14) auxiliary thanas under its jurisdiction. The principal thanas are:

* Dhanmondi
* Kotwali
* Motijheel
* Ramna
* Mohammadpur
* Sutrapur
* Tejgaon

The 14 auxiliary thanas are

* Gulshan,
* Lalbagh,
* Mirpur,
* Pallabi,
* Sabujbagh,
* Cantonment,
* Demra,
* Hazaribagh,
* Shyampur,
* Badda,
* Kafrul,
* Kamringir Char,
* Khilgaon
* Uttara.

The municipal area of Dhaka city is under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka City Corporation; for administrative purposes, the municipal area is divided into 90 wards.
